Well, Halloween is almost upon us. That time of year where there is a chill in the air, and a fresh scent to the air. A time when children want to go to their favorite store and pick out their costumes and then plan the appropriate route to get the most candy.

A time when spirits like to come out and play. A time when for some people coming across a black cat makes a person very superstitious.

We happen to have 2 black cats at our house. All of our animals are inside animals as we live on a very busy road. They stay safe this way, and there are no broken hearts.

But let me tell you a little bit about Shadow and Lucky Bear. Shadow was given to us by a very dear friend. He’s 99% black with only a few white hairs on his chest. He’s very sleek looking and would probably tell you he’s part panther if he could talk.

A few years ago, he had become very ill. When we got him to the vet, we were told there wasn’t much that could be done. For all of you animal lovers out there, you know we asked them to do everything possible to let us have our Shadow back. We visited him every day that he was at the vets office. One of the days, we pushed so much healing energy into him. The next day, we got a call from the office telling us he was doing much better. He finally came home much to our relief.

Lucky Bear is another black cat. He got his name after my 2 daughters rescued him. At first, my daughter Susan was going to take care of him and when she moved out, take him with her. That didn’t happen. Now, Lucky was essentially a feral cat and really didn’t like people. If we were watching TV, Lucky would come through at break neck speed, go flying around the corner and go either upstairs to hide in our room or down to the basement.

Imagine my surprise when one night, he actually came up to me to get a pet. Since that time, whenever I am on the couch watching TV, I usually have a Lucky Bear somewhere near me.

The boys, as I call these 2, are a riot. They will chase each other and play fight all through the house. But their favorite sport is waiting until about 2 am. Then making sure they are in the bedroom, they will start play fighting. Now, any of you with cats, know that play fighting is not quiet.

No, it usually starts out with a couple of hisses, growls and very loud meows.

And so it was the other night. I was sound asleep (I had to be up at 4:30am) when I hear this cacophony of sound. Yep, you guessed it. Monday Night at the Kitty Fights!!!!!! I jumped out of bed, stomped over to where they were sitting, and told them to quiet it down. Joe, having heard the sound, know it woke me up, started making a racket to get them out of the room. Well, I had to use the facilities and Shadow followed me right into the bathroom. He was trying to love me up so I wouldn’t stay mad at him. Smart Cat! :) All of a sudden, here comes Lucky going at warp 9, flying out of the bedroom, rounding the corner, losing his balance and careening off the wall, then jumping down 3/4 of the stairs without touching the ground. I must say, I was very impressed with his acrobatics. Shadow just stayed by my side and looked at me as if to say-wimp.

But wait there’s more. A few nights prior, I must have had a dream about fighting someone. In my sleep, I punched my arm out straight. Realized I had connected with something, heard a little meow and then a thump. Poor Lucky, I put my head up and started apologizing left and right. Of course, Shadow was sleeping on my pillow above my head. He just looked at Lucky Bear as if to say, why do you think I sleep up here, Stupid?????

My boys, Shadow and Lucky, give me so much love and affection. They also give a lot of comic relief. Their antics are on going. And always bring a smile to my face. Well, not always a smile, not at 2am :)

With Halloween, there are many superstitions about black cats, and many people are very afraid of having their paths crossed by a black cat. I’m not one of those people. I’ll take a black cat crossing my path any time of the year. And when they do, you’ll probably find me picking them up and nuzzling them.

This Halloween, please be safe. Make sure you go trick or treating in groups, wear appropriate clothing for the weather, and if you will be walking on the road, wear reflective clothing.

Also, keep in mind that dogs and cats alike should never be given chocolate, even if they beg and hold one of you for ransom.

Have fun and Happy Halloween.

Till next time.
